For CES 2025, the race for performance in the world of gaming screens has reached a new stage. Samsung announced its Odyssey OLED G6 (G60SF), the first QD-OLED monitor to reach the 500 Hz mark, ahead of the 480 Hz of WOLED panels from LG Display.

The G60SF, its nickname, sports a 27-inch panel in QHD definition (2560 x 1440 pixels), a technical choice perfectly calibrated for competitive gaming. For more versatile use, there is also a 27-inch 4K at 240 Hz, just announced.

Asus, Samsung and MSI have the best resolution for 2025: 240 Hz + 4K + OLED

This QHD definition offers an excellent compromise between display sharpness and performance, which will allow 2025 graphics cards to fully exploit these 500 Hz in esports games.

To understand the importance of this advancement, let’s take a closer look at what these refresh rates mean in terms of responsiveness:

  • 60 Hz: 16.67 ms between each frame
  • 144 Hz : 6,94 ms
  • 240 Hz : 4,17 ms
  • 360 Hz : 2,78 ms
  • 480 Hz: 2.08 ms (current LG WOLED level)
  • 500 Hz: 2 ms (new Samsung standard)
  • 600 Hz : 1,66 ms
  • 1000 Hz : 1 ms

Beyond marketing

This race for Hertz nevertheless raises relevant questions. If the difference between 60 Hz and 240 Hz is obvious, the gain perceptible beyond becomes more subtle. The majority of players, even experienced players, will struggle to perceive a significant difference beyond 240 Hz.

The technical resources mobilized to reach these extreme frequencies could be used differently. The bandwidth needed to handle 500 frames per second could, for example, be allocated to enhancing HDR or transmitting uncompressed data, potentially providing a more tangible benefit to the end user.

Nevertheless, this technical prowess from Samsung demonstrates the current superiority of its QD-OLED technology compared to LG’s WOLED. Beyond the numbers, it is the technological mastery that is impressive: maintaining OLED display quality while pushing responsiveness to these extremes is no easy feat.

The real question remains that of use. While professional esports players will potentially be able to exploit this extreme performance, the general public would likely have more to gain by investing in other features like better colorimetry, better HDR or higher resolution.
