AC Milan, left behind in the race for the Italian champion title, announced on Monday that it had parted ways with its coach, the Portuguese Paulo Fonseca, in office since last July.

“AC Milan officially announces that it has relieved Paulo Fonseca of his duties as coach of its first team,” indicated the Milanese club, 8th in Serie A, 14 points behind the leader, Atalanta, after their draw at home ( 1-1) against AS Roma on Sunday.

“The club thanks Paulo for his great professionalism and wishes him the best for his future,” the press release added.

Sixth coach fired this season

After the 18th day, the Rossoneri (8th, with a game in hand) are already 14 points behind the leader, Atalanta Bergamo, and are eight lengths from 4th place, qualifying for the Champions League, so important for a club that is still financially fragile.

There is urgency and the Lombard leaders have decided to act as their team will fly to Saudi Arabia where they will compete in the Italian Super Cup, with a semi-final against Juventus on Friday.

To replace Fonseca, Milan chose according to the Italian press which announced the dismissal of the Portuguese during the night, his compatriot Sergio Conceiçao, who knows Serie A having played there between 1998 and 2004, without a club since his departure from Porto in last June. Fonseca, 51, is the sixth coach fired this season in Serie A.
