The Central American country is threatened by its American neighbor with exorbitant customs duties if it does not curb the activity of the cartels which are flooding the United States with this synthetic drug.
Mexico announced a new seizure of fentanyl one month before the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump, who threatens to increase customs tariffs if his southern neighbor does not stop illegal immigration and drug trafficking.
More than 400,000 fentanyl pellets and six tons of chemical precursors, used to produce this synthetic drug which causes thousands of overdoses in the United States, were seized and destroyed, announced the Mexican Attorney General's Office. The seizures took place during several operations in the state of Jalisco (west), stronghold of the powerful Nueva Generación cartel.
At the beginning of December, the Mexican federal government announced the record seizure of more than a ton of fentanyl tablets, equivalent to 20,000 doses. Washington recognized this operation.
