Launched almost 20 years ago, Sony's PlayStation Portable (PSP) marked a generation by promising the PlayStation experience in a portable version… until the “PS Placeable” mod turned this promise upside down! Designed by Retro Mod Works, this device allows you to play PSP games on a television, with a Bluetooth controller like the DualShock 4. Goodbye to complicated cables and the obligation to hold the console in your hand.
A PSP that can be installed in the living room
The principle? The PS Placeable “consolidates” the PSPs of the 2000 and 3000 generations, by inserting them into a case inspired by the PlayStation 2. The mod retains the UMD player, which allows you to play physical games while modernizing the experience with a connection Bluetooth for controllers. It's a perfect solution for nostalgic gamers or those who want to give a second life to a broken or dusty PSP.

Featured on the Macho Nacho Productions YouTube channel, this mod is for those looking to combine retro technology with modern comfort! And we must admit that the PS2-style miniature design adds a charming touch to the concept.
PS Placeable is offered in several forms. For $275, Retro Mod Works offers a ready-to-use version, including an already modified PSP. But be careful, the creator, who works alone, is facing significant demand, and stocks are already exhausted. For the more resourceful, there is a “do it yourself” option for $100 less. This version requires providing your own PSP and following the instructions available on the Retro Mod Works website.
Dan, the creator behind this project, explains his approach: he wanted to add Bluetooth compatibility while retaining the UMD player. He also hopes that his DIY will allow players with PSPs with broken screens to enjoy their games again, without needing a functional screen (you will still need to have a TV on hand!).
However, not everything is perfect. Installation requires a minimum of technical skills, and setting up the Bluetooth controllers requires using a web application. Furthermore, if the PS Placeable allows you to play on a large screen, it does not solve the upscaling problems linked to the display of PSP games on a television.
PS Placeable is not for everyone. If the idea of tinkering with a console doesn't appeal to you, other solutions exist, such as simply emulation tools. But for those who appreciate the authenticity of UMD games and the retro aesthetic, this mod represents a great opportunity.
