Giorgio Contini leaves Murat Yakin and the Swiss team to coach Young Boys. The Bernese club announced in a press release on Wednesday that the 50-year-old from Zurich had signed a contract lasting until 2027.
Contini succeeds Joël Magnin, who served in the interim for more than two months after the ouster of Patrick Rahmen at the beginning of October. The Neuchâtel player returns to his usual position as U21 coach.
“Giorgio Contini fits perfectly with the profile we were looking for,” said sporting director Steve von Bergen in the YB press release. “He knows the Super League from many years of experience, he is very demanding and has a clear line. His human qualities are also highly appreciated.” His last experience as head coach was with Grasshopper (2021-2023). Previously, he coached Lausanne, St. Gallen and Vaduz.
Former assistant coach Murat Yakin and YB requested a termination of the contract which linked the Zurich resident to the Nati until the end of 2025, explained the ASF in its own press release. Contini joined the staff of the Swiss team in February and actively participated in the success of the selection during Euro 2024 in Germany, where it reached the quarter-finals.
