François Bayrou attended remotely the interministerial crisis unit convened by Emmanuel Macron. A few minutes earlier, he was on the plane to… Pau.
The new Prime Minister returned with a jet from the presidential fleet to his city Pau this Monday evening to attend a municipal council meeting “long planned” according to his entourage.
However, this trip took place while the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, had convened, practically at the same time, an interministerial crisis unit following the passage of Cyclone Chido in Mayotte where it sowed desolation.
Questioned upon his arrival at the town hall of Pau, François Bayrou seemed annoyed by a journalist's question asking if this trip did not pose a problem in the context of the moment when, incidentally, the Prime Minister must also form a new government.
“I was in contact just now with the President of the Republic,” assured François Bayrou, specifying that “some attended this crisis meeting on the situation in Mayotte remotely.” He himself attended from the Pyrénées-Atlantiques prefecture.
According to specialized X accounts, the jet flew for 52 minutes to cover the 658 kilometers traveled, spending, approximately, 800 kg of fuel.

An exceptional grant from the city of Pau for Mayotte
In the process, after a minute of silence in tribute to the victims, François Bayrou unanimously voted for an exceptional grant of 25,000 euros in aid to Mayotte by the city of Pau inviting “all the municipalities of France to do so according to their resources.
“It is an impressive disaster with immeasurable damage,” said François Bayrou. “Only 10% of families are insured and, therefore, 90% of our Mahorese compatriots are in an extremely difficult situation,” he added.
The Prime Minister then made a plea to justify his desire to remain mayor of Pau while being in Matignon. “In the past, local authorities were present in the national debate. They are no longer. Members of the government are authorized to remain mayors, parliamentarians are not. We must ask the question again,” assured François Bayrou.
