The canton of Friborg is asking the energy company Group E to develop the ‘Schiffenen-Morat’ project, with a view to ecologically cleaning up the hydroelectric installations in Schiffenen. The cost of the chosen variant is estimated, at this stage, at 350 million francs.

The project was presented on Wednesday by State Councilors Didier Castella and Jean-François Steiert, with representatives of Group E. It consists of digging a gallery between the Schiffenen and Morat lakes, with water turbines in a factory underground.

The construction will simultaneously improve the protection of fauna and flora, while producing more electricity than the current plant. The work must begin before the end of 2030 to benefit from financial support from the Confederation.

The ‘Schiffenen-Morat’ project will thus ensure an annual production more than doubled to 280 gigawatt hours (GWh). The gain will supply nearly 23,000 households with electricity and corresponds to half of the canton’s energy objectives for 2030.
