Since November 7, Dakar has established itself as a dazzling showcase of African Art.
The Senegalese capital hosts the Biennial of Contemporary African Art, known as Dak’Art, an unmissable event for amateurs and professionals in the art world. This prestigious event, which brings together established artists and promising young talents, confirms the role of the biennial as a platform for expression and international recognition.
A springboard for Senegalese artists
For many local artists, Dak’Art is much more than just an exhibition. This is a unique opportunity to project yourself onto the international scene. Alioune Diagne, young Senegalese painter, testifies to the impact of this biennial.
“In 2022, I was selected. I had quite a few opportunities. That’s when I really launched myself onto the international scene,” he explains enthusiastically.
Alioune is not alone in dreaming of a bright artistic future. Semedo, another rising figure in Senegalese painting, seduces the public with his unique style: upside-down portraits that challenge and fascinate. However, despite the growing success of his works, the self-taught artist remains lucid about the necessary sacrifices.
“Currently I am feeding the tree. I believe that one day this tree will feed me. For the moment, I am making a lot of sacrifices, but I am convinced that it will pay off in the end,” he confides, full of hope.
A biennial with global influence
Created in 1992, the Dak’Art Biennale is a biennial event that places Dakar at the heart of contemporary African art. The event attracts artists, curators, critics and collectors from the four corners of the globe. More than just a festival, it is a celebration of African creativity, propelling Dakar as the world capital of contemporary African art.
The Biennale continues to reveal new talents, encourage exchanges and strengthen the status of African art on the international scene. An artistic excitement which, for a few weeks, makes Dakar and its visitors vibrate.
