Swiss hospitals would not function without their staff trained abroad. This is clearly shown by the statistics published on Tuesday by the Federal Statistical Office.
In detail, in 2023, Swiss hospitals recorded 1.5 million inpatient stays and 23.9 million outpatient consultations. Support made possible by the work of their staff, corresponding to 185,800 full-time equivalent jobs (FTE). That year, employment in hospitals increased by around 4,960 FTEs (+2.7% compared to 2022). Among these employees, the share of foreign-qualified doctors is 45.6%. This share is lower among qualified nursing staff, but it is still around a third (31.9%). These proportions have increased slightly compared to 2022.
