Morocco’s Ambassador to the UN, Omar Hilale, was elected president of the 6th Conference on the establishment of a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East for 2025.
This election occurs in a regional context marked by rising tensions and challenges linked to nuclear proliferation. The Conference, established following a General Assembly resolution in 2018, aims to negotiate a binding treaty to eliminate nuclear and weapons of mass destruction in the region. It is part of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). This appointment reflects international recognition of Moroccan expertise in disarmament and confidence in its role as mediator.
Hilale called for concerted actions, based on good faith, to strengthen regional cooperation and accelerate the achievement of the Treaty’s objectives. The UN Secretary-General welcomed Morocco’s election, highlighting Hilale’s impressive record in the field of disarmament, notably as President of the First Committee in 2021 and of the Conference on Disarmament in 2004.
