The year is not over, but there are already more domestic murders this year than in 2023 in Quebec, reported The Journal in September. On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, we highlight the memory of the victims of femicide which sadly marked the year 2024.

“It takes a toll on our hearts, that’s for sure, because everything we do is to avoid things like that. When this happens, it reminds us that there is still a lot of work to do,” laments Claudine Thibaudeau, responsible for files related to the issue of domestic violence at SOS violenceconjugale.
Sad observation, while organizations are overwhelmed by calls.
“Before 2016, we had an average of 25,000 requests [d’aide] per year, then for three years, we have had more than 50,000,” illustrates Claudine Thibaudeau.
More and more women as well as victims’ loved ones are turning to resources, refusing to tolerate violent and toxic environments, argues Manon Monastesse, general director of the Federation of women’s shelters.
“We are still victims of our success,” she says. The fact that we are overwhelmed in our services is also a good sign.”
