In total, 1,329 candidates are authorized by the Constitutional Council to appear on the final lists of candidates for the legislative elections of December 29, 2024.

Two weeks after the publication of the provisional lists of candidates for the legislative elections of December 29, 2024, the Constitutional Council deliberated this Monday on the appeals.

In total, 116 requests were filed by candidates or groups of political parties, indicated Me Jean-Bernard Padaré, president of the Constitutional Council.
Among these requests, five concerned re-registration on the list of candidates. All candidates from the Patriotic Salvation Movement (MPS), the ruling party. After examining the arguments and the means of proof, the Constitutional Council found two to be well-founded and rejected the three.

Thus, Ms. Mariam Djimet Ibet and Ibrahim Foullah Wang Laouna, MPS candidates for the N’Djamena constituency are authorized to appear among the final candidates. The ANGE, the electoral body, had in its deliberation of November 12 rejected their files for questionable morality and spelling variations in their names.
However, in the case of Mahamat Zen Bada, MPS candidate for the Abtouyour constituency, the Constitutional Council ruled in favor of the ANGE.

The electoral body rejected his candidacy on the grounds of his conviction by the courts in 2012 for misappropriation of public funds and forgery. Two other candidates, also convicted, saw their appeals rejected.

In the absence of amnesty or rehabilitation, the convicted person remains ineligible, said the President of the Constitutional Council. They are replaced on the list by three other candidates.

The three applicants whose appeals were rejected are threatened with legal action. The Constitutional Council ordered the transfer of their files to the public prosecutor for appropriate measures. Their registration on the electoral list and the production of clean criminal records constitute a violation of the law, consider the ANGE and the Constitutional Council.

The legislative elections of December 29, 2024 will mark the end of the transition with the restoration of the National Assembly. This was dissolved in April 2021 when the army took power following the death of President Idriss Déby Itno on the battlefield.
