A secret operation, called “Green and Yellow Dagger”, would have aimed to assassinate Lula, newly elected president of Brazil, at the end of 2022. The former Brazilian president accused the judge in charge of the investigation of acting outside “the law”.
The Brazilian federal police recommended this Thursday the indictment of former President Jair Bolsonaro for an alleged coup attempt in order to “maintain in power” despite his electoral defeat against Lula in 2022. A secret operation called “Green and yellow dagger” would have aimed to assassinate Lula. Thirty-six other personalities are also the subject of a request for indictment as part of this investigation, the final report of which was sent Thursday to the Supreme Court, the police detailed in a press release.
“The Federal Police concluded this Thursday the investigation into the existence of a criminal organization which acted in a coordinated manner in 2022, in the attempt to maintain the president of the time in power, details this press release. The final report was sent to the Supreme Court, with the request to indict 37 people for the crimes of violent abolition of the democratic rule of law, coup d'état and criminal organization. Judge Alexandre de Moraes “do everything that the law does not say”reacted on X Jair Bolsonaro.
The federal police report must then be submitted by the Supreme Court to the Attorney General's Office, which will have to decide on this basis whether or not to initiate proceedings against the former head of state (2019- 2023). The list of 37 people whose indictment investigators have recommended also includes former ministers in Bolsonaro's government, including Defense Minister Walter Braga Netto, who was also his 2022 vice-presidential candidate.
Four soldiers arrested on Tuesday
General Augusto Heleno, former minister of the Institutional Security Cabinet, who was considered the eminence grise of the ex-president, and Alexandre Ramagem, who was the head of the intelligence services under his mandate, were also targeted.
Four soldiers, including a former collaborator of Jair Bolsonaro, had already been arrested on Tuesday, suspected of having instigated a “coup d’état”. These arrests took place in the middle of the G20 summit. A police source indicated that the suspects arrested were mobilized to secure the event in Rio de Janeiro, which the army subsequently denied.
Four of the five suspects, a reserve general and three lieutenant colonels, were “soldiers who have undergone special forces training”who have “used their high level of technical-military knowledge” to foment this project aimed at “prevent the legitimately elected government from taking office in 2022”.
The plan planned to kill Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva as well as the elected vice-president, Geraldo Alckmin, on December 15, 2022, two weeks before their inauguration, the Federal Police said in a press release. The plan would then have been to arrest and then execute Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes, a powerful magistrate hated by Jair Bolsonaro.
