Skyguide on Friday lifted capacity restrictions in Geneva airspace introduced following heavy rains on Tuesday. Air traffic at Geneva airport was already able to resume on Wednesday morning.

Despite the resumption of flights, the capacity of the airspace had been reduced for safety reasons since Tuesday evening. The basement of the Skyguide air traffic control centre in Geneva, which houses cooling systems, had been flooded.

The air traffic controller says it has taken various measures to ensure that air traffic control systems do not overheat and to ensure the control room is cooled, even in the event of a power outage. This is achieved in particular by means of an additional external cooling system and a mobile diesel generator.

Skyguide says these are temporary solutions. It will take “some time” before the water damage is completely repaired, according to Skyguide.
