“It is therefore our duty to actively and strongly contribute to the development of this region.” The president of the CGEM calls on the private sector to invest in the region.
“This region, which stands out for its incomparable beauty and its magnificent climate, also asserts itself as a true strategic economic hub, open to the entire African continent,” says Chakib Alj.
And to add, “the region of Dakhla-Oued Eddahab, like the whole of Morocco, is experiencing significant economic momentum. This momentum is marked by the growing international recognition of the Moroccan nature of the Sahara.”
The Momentum, of which the president of the CGEM speaks, is marked by “the ambition of our country, under the leadership of His Majesty, to unite the African countries of the Atlantic coast, around a common project, that of transforming the economy of this space and to make it a credible, resilient regional grouping, attractive to investments and impactful for the populations, especially at the time of the implementation of the Zlecaf. This ambition obviously has as its driving force. southern provinces of our country.
The Dakhla-Oued Eddahab region brings growth and development for businesses
And to the president of employers to praise the region’s assets: solid key sectors, such as fishing, aquaculture, agriculture and tourism, “in which we must continue to invest”, and sectors of the future with high potential, notably renewable energies, “the development of which must be accelerated”.
“It is important to further accelerate the pace of investment in the region,” he insists, specifying the fundamentals to do this: connectivity and infrastructure.
And in this area, “several large-scale projects have already seen the light of day, such as the Tiznit-Dakhla expressway and the El Argoub Aerocity, which would strengthen the strategic position of Dakhla in its immediate international geographical environment”, quotes Chakib Alj.
Other structuring projects are underway, such as the Dakhla Atlantique port megaproject, which will connect the region to several strategic maritime routes and create innovative and sustainable industrial ecosystems, as well as the ‘West Africa’ logistics zone, while the Agadir-Guerguerat expressway will support the economic growth of the region by completing its road network.
“These achievements can be enriched by the consolidation of air connectivity in the city of Dakhla, but also by promoting intangible, cultural and gastronomic capital, in particular through investment in the cultural and creative industries, as well as the labeling of cooperatives and local associations to promote know-how and regional heritage,” he says.
The president of the CGEM also cites green hydrogen. “The region has all the assets necessary for the development of this offer. Firstly, significant potential in renewable energies and already operational wind power capacities. Secondly, a seawater desalination unit essential for the production of green hydrogen , and which should be operational from next year.
For the establishment of industrial zones
Across all sectors of activity, Chakib Alj believes that it “remains essential to strengthen the development of industrial zones with suitable and accessible land”.
And added, “at the same time, it is imperative to create an attractive environment to mobilize qualified talent, supported by the implementation of adequate training for human capital to support the region’s projects.”
