Alice Cavalerie, a master’s degree graduate in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, is the author of one of the four winning photos at the end of the last competition Proof by the image organized by Acfas.
Titled Walls and whispersthis photo, taken at dusk in Quaqtaq, Nunavik, well illustrates the subject of this student’s research. His work, carried out in the team of Professor Louis Gosselin, aims to document and predict human behavior linked to energy in Nunavik, in particular the opening of windows in homes.
To do this, Alice Cavalerie collected data using sensors installed in ten homes. She also conducted interviews on the interactions between people and the building, and on people’s needs in terms of comfort. The student recently published the results of part of her work in the journal Building and Environment.
Four photos taken by members of the university community were among the finalist works in the competition Proof by the image of 2024. Another photo was submitted to the English-speaking counterpart of this competition, Science Exposed. A jury rewarded the three most remarkable works among the 20 finalist images in each competition. In addition, two public prizes were awarded to the works having received the most votes in a popular vote.
Remember that these competitions are organized by Acfas and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) with the aim of celebrating the image as a means of scientific communication in all areas of knowledge.
