A senior figure within the police force has been convicted by the employment tribunal. Vincent Gilles, the president of the SLFP Police union, is found guilty of having created a degrading and humiliating climate with one of his colleagues. The victim agreed to testify exclusively for RTLinfo.
Vincent Gilles, president of the SLFP police union, was found guilty of establishing a degrading and humiliating climate towards one of his colleagues, Gaëlle, who agreed to testify to RTL info. Gaëlle, a lawyer specializing in cases of harassment within the union, worked for nearly 13 years in this organization before becoming a victim of such acts herself.
It was so violent
“On a daily basis, there were threats, intimidation, belittling, nasty words… It was so violent that it caused serious health problems for me.“, says Gaëlle. The court noted that the facts took place over more than a year, creating a hostile and humiliating work environment which undermined the integrity of the victim.
This must stop
Today, Gaëlle hopes that her testimony will serve as an example. “It’s not just for me. It’s for all the women who work in the police and who suffer these abuses of power“, she explains. “This must stop“, she insists.
Vincent Gilles and the SLFP were ordered to pay compensation to Gaëlle, officially recognized as a victim. “The courts took this seriously. She followed me, she believed me. Harassment did not go unpunished“, declares Gaëlle.
She now wants to return to her position within the union. For his part, Vincent Gilles has chosen not to comment on the decision for the moment.
