Lhe former President of the Republic, Macky Sall, appears to be finding a new lease of life as French President Emmanuel Macron’s special envoy for the Paris Pact for People and the Planet (4P) since his ejection from the presidential chair. Although he seems fully committed to this new mission, this appointment causes his former head of government Aminata Touré a certain discomfort.

“That an African President of the Republic finds himself special envoy of his former French colleague, a former colonial power, makes me uncomfortable. I would never have considered it. It’s his choice. But it presents itself very strangely,” she said.

The former campaign director of Benno leader Bokk Yakaar believes that Macky Sall could have adopted a more rewarding role on the African continent:

“I would have seen him more in an African posture where he would have a lot to do here on the continent. But if he is also the leader of the opposition exiled in Paris, that is incompatibilities of positioning,” she criticized during her speech on the RFM.

Mimi Touré sees in this situation a discordance between Macky Sall’s position as former Senegalese president and his current role under the aegis of a former colonial power. For her, this new direction from Macky Sall could have been better aligned with the needs and challenges of the African continent, where his experience and influence could have had a significant impact.
