The number of Mpox cases in Africa has reached 53,903 including 11,147 confirmed and 1,109 deaths since the start of 2024, said the African Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), based in Addis Ababa.
A total of 2,836 new cases were reported last week, including 461 confirmed and 34 deaths, said Africa CDC Director General Jean Kaseya, speaking at an online press conference on Thursday.
After highlighting that the number of confirmed cases increased by 569 pc in 2024 compared to 2023, Mr. Kaseya recalled that CDC Africa, through its Diagnostics Advisory Committee (DAC), recommended the first real-time PCR test for Mpox manufactured locally in Morocco.
Last August, Africa CDC and the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the Mpox outbreak in Africa a public health emergency.
A six-month joint continental response plan with WHO and with a budget of nearly $600 million was recently launched.
