A legend from Saint-Etienne to light the cauldron

St-Etienne and the Geoffroy-Guichard stadium will host this summer, on the occasion of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, matches of the men’s and women’s football tournament. Until then, the flame of these 2024 Olympics will pass through the Cauldron with a last bearer who belongs to the legend of the Greens!

This Saturday, June 22, the Olympic flame will pass through St-Etienne. An event that will mobilize the entire city and highlight the most beautiful sites and cultural places in the metropolis.

For such an event, it was necessary to find flame bearers embodying values. Among them, well-known athletes such as discus thrower Mélina Robert-Michon or swimmer Amaury Leveaux will carry the flame to St-Chamond.

Larqué, from the 1968 Olympics to the 2024 Olympics…

On the St-Etienne side, a last renowned bearer was needed, symbolizing the place where the cauldron will be lit, the popularity and the sporting values. Thus, it was the former captain of the Greens, Jean-Michel Larqué, who was chosen. The latter will carry the torch around 7:30 p.m. and light the Olympic cauldron installed at the Geoffroy-Guichard stadium. The ASSE strategist recently mentioned this event in the Sud Ouest newspaper: “I’m going to make the most of it and I’m sure a lot of things from that time will come to the surface. This flame, I didn’t imagine that it would fall on me and that it would move me to this extent. »

It must be said that Jean-Michel Larqué has already participated in the Olympics. It was 1968, in Mexico. At the age of 20, despite playing 30 games with the Greens, he was considered an amateur player and selected for the French Olympic team. He tells : “Roger Rocher did not view my selection with the French Olympic team very favorably. The Games took place in September, Saint-Etienne had to defend its national title and perform well in the European Cup. The president of the federation at the time finally won his case and imposed my participation.”

Saint-Etienne supporters will be able to proudly witness this arrival of the flame in their Cauldron. Because the Green flame is a bit like the Olympics, it never goes out…
