THE FIGARO EDITORIAL – Brussels is threatening to impose a penalty of around fifteen billion euros on European manufacturers if they do not respect the trajectory of reducing CO2 emissions. Or how to deal them a blow in the middle of a technological and commercial war.

Can Europe be crazy enough to accelerate its “slow agony”, as Mario Draghi described it? We dare not believe it after the publication of the report in which the former president of the ECB calls for a surge to prevent our Old Continent from definitively falling behind China and the United States. And yet… Brussels is threatening to impose around fifteen billion euros in fines next year on European manufacturers if they do not respect the trajectory of reducing CO2 emissions from the cars they sell. Dealing a blow to its flagships in the middle of a technological and commercial war, let’s admit that there are better strategies for reconquest!

Let’s hope that the new Commission will have a burst of lucidity and clairvoyance to avoid applying these stupid (suicidal?) and above all unfounded levies. Firstly because drivers are reluctant to buy electric cars, preferring hybrids…
