Building the Foundations of an African Financial Power

The Africa Financial Summit (AFIS) 2024 will be held in Casablanca on December 9 and 10, bringing together the greatest leaders of the African and global financial sector around an ambitious objective: making African finance a pillar of development and resilience for the continent.

Created in 2021 by Jeune Afrique Media Group and co-organized by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), AFIS 2024 this year addresses the evocative theme: “The time of African financial powers has come”.

This continental event, organized for the first time in Morocco, benefits from a solid partnership with several Moroccan institutions, including the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Moroccan Capital Market Authority, and the Casablanca Stock Exchange . This support underlines the strategic importance of this event, which aspires to lay the foundations of a robust financial industry, capable of meeting Africa’s growing financing needs.

A Partnership with Morocco: A Strategic Choice

The choice of Casablanca as host for this edition is not insignificant. Morocco, engaged under the leadership of King Mohammed VI in a dynamic of South-South cooperation, is strengthening its positioning as a key player in finance in Africa. Nadia Fettah Alaoui, Minister of Economy and Finance of Morocco, explains this involvement: “It is only natural for Morocco to host an event like AFIS, a unique platform in Africa that promotes a unified vision for financial inclusion and institutional partnerships at the pan-African level. Located at a strategic crossroads between Europe and Africa, with solid financial establishments and in-depth knowledge of the continent’s markets, Morocco intends to fully assume its role in the reorganization of the African financial industry. »

Building a World-Class African Financial Ecosystem

For Amir Ben Yahmed, CEO of Jeune Afrique Media Group and president of AFIS 2024, this edition has a particular challenge. “With the departure of major international players, the African financial sector must rise to the challenge posed to it to meet the needs of the continent itself. AFIS 2024 is not only a discussion platform, it is a laboratory that should enable bold decisions to be made in order to build a world-class financial ecosystem. »

This vision is shared by Sérgio Pimenta, IFC Vice President for Africa, who underlines the importance of mobilizing the continent’s financial resources to respond to development challenges, whether it involves the creation of jobs, SME financing, energy transition or digitalization. “Mobilising the full strength and potential of the African financial sector is essential to accelerate the continent’s development,” he said.

An Imperative of Resilience and Autonomy for African Finance

Through strategic discussions and technical workshops, AFIS 2024 aims to strengthen the resilience of African finance, encourage reforms and consolidate the leadership of Pan-African champions. In a context where Africa aspires to occupy a central place in the global economy, the event offers an opportunity to rethink the financial future of the continent and work towards increased financial inclusion.
