A new mammograph speeds up screenings in Drummondville

The pace and precision of breast cancer screenings are accelerating at the Sainte- Hospital in Drummondville. This is possible thanks to the provision of a new mammograph, a device which is able to carry out three-dimensional examinations.

This state-of-the-art device, also capable of performing biopsies, supports the classic mammograph already in use at the hospital. This addition means that women in the region would have to wait less time to obtain this crucial, life-saving test.

If we take standard mammograms from older generations, we detect around eight cancers per 1000 patients. With mammography 3D in tomosynthesis, we increase to 11 per 1000 patientsexplains the radiologist at Sainte-Croix Hospital, Brigitte Grandmont.

The radiologist specifies that these screenings concern asymptomatic patients.

Drummondville resident Solange Lebel is one of Dr. Grandmont’s patients. She has been undergoing mammograms periodically for years and, for her, this rigor has been beneficial. I always showed up for my appointments and I was always there every two years. This device, in addition to a good surgeon, saved my life!she emphasizes.

According to the CIUSSS of Mauricie and Centre-du-Québec (MCQ), 750 women in the Drummondville region are currently waiting to obtain a mammogram. This waiting list should, however, decrease quickly with the addition of the new mammograph, estimates the organization.

According to Doctor Brigitte Grandmont, 145 Drummondville residents have been diagnosed with breast cancer since last January. The latter also invites all women aged 50 to 74 to request this examination.
