- In Switzerland, there have been 18 femicides since the start of 2024, most often the act of a current or past spouse.
- In Geneva, recorded domestic violence increased by 11% between 2022 and 2023.
- A public prevention campaign is launched from November 11 to 30.
- Campaign slogans emphasize collective responsibility to stop this violence.
Since January, 18 feminicides have been recorded in Switzerland. Women most often killed by their spouse or ex-partner. This is the most extreme form of gender-based violence among many others such as ordinary sexism, sexual harassment or other forms of aggression. Criminal offenses for domestic violence are also increasing in Geneva: between 2022 and 2023, the number of cases (1939) is increasing by 11% in Geneva. In 80% of cases, the victims are women.
To better combat the various psychological, financial, physical and/or sexual violence, the Council of State and the City of Geneva, surrounded by 38 associative and institutional partners, are launching a prevention campaign for the second year in a row.
Entitled “Sexist and sexual violence: let’s put an end to it!”, the action is taking place throughout the canton between November 11 and 30, through street posters, in public transport and taxis, on social networks or still in secondary II establishments. Several municipalities, including Vernier and Pregny-Chambésy, are also participating in the initiative.
Slogans like “You are witnesses”, “We believe you”, or “It is my right to say no” highlight collective responsibility by addressing all actors: victims, perpetrators and witnesses of violence.
Nathalie Fontanet, President of the Council of State, indicates that the International Day of November 25 for the Elimination of Gender-Based and Sexual Violence will this year highlight the phenomenon of the “continuum of violence” – emphasizing that the majority of women are experience of violence and that these are interconnected.
During the three weeks of the campaign, conferences, exhibitions and performances will offer various means of addressing these questions. The campaign website, www.25novembre-geneve.chlaunched in 2023, is intended to be a toolbox for gathering resources.
Call to men
Alfonso Gomez, administrative advisor in charge of equality in the city, recalled the adoption, in 2019, of the “Zero sexism in my city” action plan, but also the internal review carried out. Indeed, a study carried out between 2022 and 2024 within the municipal administration showed that more than a third of women (35%) and more than a quarter of men (27%) reported working in a sexist work environment. The study highlighted “acts of sexual violence” among 21% of women and 9% of men surveyed (especially stares and comments of a sexual nature).
And now? “The results of the survey are presented in all departments, also a way of raising awareness among Human Resources as well as service management,” explains Héloïse Roman, equality project manager for the City of Geneva. Internal training will be set up.”
The magistrate appeals to the men. “Although this historic fight was carried out by women and gender minorities, it is essential that the whole of society mobilizes to move things forward.”
