The 7th edition of the Paris Peace Forum opened Monday at the Palais de Chaillot, in the heart of the French capital.
Placed under the theme “the search for a world order that works”, this global conclave bringing together over two days heads of state and government, as well as senior representatives of international organizations, will address, according to its promoters, “the need “urgent need for effective international governance in a world marked by great power rivalries, global instability, North-South mistrust and new transnational challenges.”
“In the face of conflict and instability, from Ukraine to Gaza to Sudan to the Great Lakes, we can sometimes lose hope. But we have no choice: we must rebuild a world order that works to govern these global public goods such as climate, nutrition, agriculture, health, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence,” emphasizes the Founder. and Director General of the Paris Peace Forum, Justin Vaïsse in presentation of this edition.
And added: “It is by coming together to address these great challenges that we can also begin to lay the foundations for lasting peace.”
The impact of political tensions on the geopolitical context and multilateralism will thus be at the heart of discussions during this event which is being held at a pivotal period with a landmark election year.
The 7th Paris Peace Forum comes less than a week after the American presidential election won by Republican Donald Trump and just before the G20 in Rio and the COP in Baku, but also in a context of earlier votes in the year for the European Parliament, as well as national elections in India, Mexico, Indonesia, France and the United Kingdom.
It also brings together, a few weeks after the UN Futures Summit, relevant actors around discussions on how to deal with violent conflicts, from the war in Ukraine to the situation in the Middle East, including Central Africa and the Horn of Africa.
For its 7th edition, the Forum will continue to focus on the international governance of global public goods: agriculture, transition minerals, equitable sharing of public health benefits, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and other key issues requiring better North-South and East-West coordination, and which can lay the foundations for lasting peace through dialogue.
Like every year, the Paris Peace Forum organizes an event that brings together political leaders, business leaders, and civil society actors from around the world to address the most pressing global challenges.
The event will also once again be an opportunity to present the large-scale projects supported each year by the Paris Peace Forum on a wide range of issues linked to global governance.
Founded in 2018 at the instigation of French President Emmanuel Macron on the occasion of the commemoration of the end of the First World War, the Paris Peace Forum’s mission is to address global challenges such as climate change, poverty and inequality, security and the rise of new technologies, by building new forms of collective action that complement the work of multilateral institutions and contribute to the establishment of lasting peace.
Designed as an international multi-actor platform dedicated to global governance solutions, encouraging dialogue and collaboration, the Forum thus aims to strengthen the governance of global common goods such as climate, space or oceans, and to improve the international management of global issues, particularly those of digital and disruptive technologies.
