Scared to death: when the Democrats fall into conspiracy | US elections 2024

Donald Trump won the election on Tuesday evening. Democratic leaders recognize the outcome of the vote and congratulated their opponent on his victory. Among the most fervent Democratic supporters, on the other hand, the story is quite different.

They played the game really badly. They tried to steal the popular vote, the Electoral College, the Senate and the House of Representatives. They have gone too far and it seems too much. They’re going to get caught!

The mystery isn’t whether they cheated or not. The mystery is how they did it.

Could it really be that a secret plan was in motion? That would really be a big haul. We make them believe that they have won and bam! The ax falls.

Republican supporters have accustomed us to such messages on social networks after the defeat of Donald Trump in 2020. Since then, they have not budged: the election was rigged. Impossible that their candidate really lost.

However, since the re-election of Donald Trump on Tuesday evening, it is Democratic supporters who have started to cry, without foundation, of electoral fraud. The messages that we present to you at the beginning of the text were published in recent days by supporters of Kamala Harris.

However, the Republican victory is quite clear. Donald Trump won not only the popular vote, but also every key state. Kamala Harris and current Democratic President Joe Biden quickly acknowledged the results and congratulated Mr. Trump. It is unequivocal.

However, in very pro-Harris circles on social networks, the story is quite different: the voting machines were hacked by Russia, the media acted in concert to hastily give victory to Trump and a recount will give victory for Kamala Harris. Or again, this is all part of a huge setup to trap Trump and have him thrown in prison.

Since Wednesday morning, many Democratic supporters have argued that votes were lost. Some say 20 million votes for Kamala Harris were uncounted. How do we arrive at this calculation? In 2020, Joe Biden had obtained 81 million votes, while as of Wednesday morning, Ms. Harris had only accumulated 60 million.

20 million votes are missing. There is no way Democrats have 20 million fewer votes than in 2020 when we had record turnoutwe can read in a tweet seen nearly three million times.

However, the explanation is simple: the votes have not yet all been counted. As of this writing, only 91% of votes nationwide have been counted. The Democratic vote gap between 2020 and 2024 has also narrowed, and Kamala Harris has eight million more votes than she had as of Wednesday morning.

Wednesday, the New York Times painted a fairly eloquent portrait of the situation (New window). On the Republican side, there were cries of rigged voting all day Tuesday until the results began to seem advantageous to Donald Trump. From 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., nearly 900 tweets per minute mentioned election irregularities in Pennsylvania. By 9 p.m., it was 100 tweets per minute. At midnight, almost nothing.

Conversely, on the Democratic side, we began to denounce missing votes around 3 a.m. Wednesday, when Trump’s victory had become inevitable. Around 11 a.m. the same day, no less than 94,000 tweets per hour mentioned the missing votesaccording to the analysis of the New York daily.

Threads, an echo chamber

An element that we were able to notice in Decryptorsthis is how a Democratic echo chamber was able to build on Threads. This social network, a sort of clone of Twitter created by Meta, the company behind Facebook and Instagram, constitutes a refuge for people who have decided to leave X (formerly Twitter). Since Elon Musk purchased the social network in 2022, many disgruntled users – largely opponents of Donald Trump – have turned to Threads.

During the day on Tuesday, we saw many publications claiming that Kamala Harris was going to win hands down. Some even predicted that she would sweep all the swing states and even conquer Republican strongholds like Texas and Florida.

In the evening, when the electoral map began to turn red, many accounts maintained that victory was imminent despite everything. It was, as in 2020, a mirage rougewe argued on Threads; the media were obviously looking for spectacle to keep people in suspense.

Friends, stop listening to the news. They’re written by people who want you to be afraid, because it keeps you glued to the screen, and that’s what makes them moneywe could read in a publication Wednesday morning.

Step away from the news and listen to your heart. Your heart knows that she is going to win and that everything is going to be okay.

This disinformation, however, has nothing to do with that to which the Trump camp has accustomed us, as wrote on Wednesday Wired (New window)which sets the record straight. It is noted that, unlike Donald Trump, who has always refused to acknowledge his defeat in 2020, who did everything to try to stay in power and who continues to undermine Americans’ confidence in their electoral system, this disinformation only comes from of supporters on social networks. The official authorities of the Democratic Party took no part in it.

However, disinformation specialist Nina Jankowicz says she is concerned about the conspiratorial turn of some Democratic supporters.

It doesn’t matter whether the unfounded allegations of voting irregularities come from the right or the left, she told Wired. The impact of these lies on our institutions remains the same: people will trust our democratic institutions less and less, which will encourage even more disinformation and citizen disengagement.

This loss of confidence could take decades to repair, she estimates.

Wired posted this article on Threads Thursday morning.

It is ABSOLUTELY TRUE [que l’élection a été volée] and everyone has PROOF! can we read in one of the comments.
