Ludvig Aberg confirms his thunderous arrival in the professional world at the age of 24, after his 2nd place at the Masters. A card of 69 (1 under par) allowed him to capitalize on his excellent first day Thursday (66) to find himself alone at -5 under par.

“I hit the ball very well. It was obviously a very difficult course. But I feel like I knew how to stay disciplined, very patient, trying to target the areas I was targeting,” said the young Swede.

McIlroy in ambush

One shot behind Aberg, the Americans Bryson DeChambeau and Patrick Cantlay, as well as the Belgian Thomas Detry share 2nd place. The Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy, world No. 3 winner of the tournament in 2011 and co-leader Thursday evening, remains in ambush with two shots, tied with the Frenchman Matthieu Pavon and the American Tony Finau.

Much further down the rankings, Tiger Woods (card of 73, +7 total) once again failed to make the cut for a Major, after the PGA Championship in May and a 60th place at the Masters in April. The man with 15 major titles returned in January after ankle surgery in April 2023, without managing to return to a good level.

“A chore”

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, winner of the Masters and almost invincible this season, showed his frustration during a day that ended with a card of 74, for a total score of +5 at 10 shots of the head which allows him everything just making the cut before the final two rounds this weekend.

“It was a chore. I’m proud of the way I fought. I just couldn’t make the putts fall,” said Scheffler, author of a card without a birdie that was extremely rare for him, on a day where he threw his clubs in rage several times.
