Last August, the Greens, socialist women and an independent lawyer from Vaud filed an appeal with the Federal Court to cancel the vote on raising the retirement age for women. The calculation errors on AVS forecasts, revealed by the Federal Office of Social Insurance (OFAS) on August 6, had caused the political class to jump and pushed Stéphane Rossini, director of the office, towards the exit.

The judicial aspect of these painful episodes will be decided on December 12, from 10 a.m., at the Federal Court during a “public deliberation”, according to a document from the highest court of justice in the country that Time was able to consult. We can read in particular: “There will be no pleadings. The presence of the parties or their representatives is not required. But the stakes are such that a fairly large crowd is expected to go to Lausanne that day. For the five magistrates responsible for these appeals, it is a question of overturning or validating the result of the vote on AVS 21 which notably made it possible to raise the retirement age of women to 65 years. A narrow majority of Swiss people (50.5%) accepted this reform in 2022. At the heart of the arguments at the time: a gesture was necessary to save the finances of the AVS. As the latter are doing better than expected, the result of this close election is called into question.
