A PE teacher, working at the Jean-Jaurès high school in Montreuil (Seine-Saint-Denis), was attacked by a student this Tuesday, November 5, 2024.
The situation apparently degenerated when the teacher asked the teenager, who was wearing religious clothing, to change, reports BFM Île-de-France who revealed the information.
The rectorate confirmed this incident to l'AFP. “A student slapped her teacher who told her that her outfit was inappropriate”declared to l'AFP the Créteil rectorate, responsible for Seine-Saint-Denis.
On the other hand, the rectorate explained that the outfit in question was not an abaya, as mentioned by BFM TV and in a first version of this article. The second year high school student's outfit was “with religious connotations” but was not an abaya, the rectorate clarified.
The abaya has been banned in public schools since the start of the 2023 school year.
The teacher filed a complaint
The teacher, who has been off work since this attack, filed a complaint at the Montreuil police station. The Créteil academy offered him functional protection and psychological support. The young girl was excluded from high school as a precautionary measure, pending the decision of the disciplinary council.
“The rector condemns this aggression and reaffirms her firmness in the face of any violence against our staff and any attack on the values of the Republic,” said rector Julie Benetti on X.
This incident, which touches on the highly sensitive issue of secularism in schools, immediately generated political reactions.
