Russian President Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump both signaled on Thursday that they were ready to reconnect, following the Republican’s victory in the US presidential election.

“If someone wants to get back in touch, I don’t mind. I’m ready,” Mr. Putin said at a forum about Mr. Trump. “I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate him on his election to the presidency of the United States.”

“I think we’re going to talk to each other,” Donald Trump said about Vladimir Putin on Thursday, during an interview with NBC.

The president-elect said he had “probably” already spoken to 70 foreign leaders since his victory in Tuesday’s election.

Before the American election, Mr. Putin publicly declared that he would prefer to see Joe Biden, then Kamala Harris, in the White House, deeming them more “predictable” for Moscow than the Republican candidate.

According to a book published by famous journalist Bob Woodward, Donald Trump has spoken to Vladimir Putin in secret up to seven times since he left the White House in 2021.

The Republican also allegedly secretly sent Covid-19 screening tests to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin when he was at the White House and in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

On Thursday, the master of the Kremlin assured that he was impressed by the way in which Mr. Trump behaved during an assassination attempt which narrowly missed him during a meeting in July.

“He turned out to be a courageous person,” Mr. Putin said.

“People show who they are in extraordinary circumstances. That’s where a person reveals himself. And he behaved, in my opinion, in a very correct, courageous way. Like a man,” said Mr. Poutine.

Mr. Trump has been criticized on several occasions for his laudatory remarks about Mr. Putin.
