German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Wednesday evening dismissed his Federal Finance Minister, Christian Lindner, president of the Liberal Party (FDP – right), one of the three parties forming the government coalition in Germany with the SPD (social democrat) and the Greens.
This dismissal endangers a government coalition already weakened, in particular because of the economic policy of Germany, the leading European power, which is struggling has revive an economy in the doldrums.
A dispute with the FDP over economic and budgetary policy is at the origin of this dismissal, which took place after a meeting of the coalition held earlier in the day, without reaching a consensus, specify local media, noting that the president of the FDP has proposed early legislative elections in early 2025 as an outcome au blockage on the government’s economic policy.
In a televised address, the German chancellor announced his intention to pose the question of confidence to Bundestag deputies in early January, paving the way for the possibility of the end of his mandate and early parliamentary elections.
German MPs will have to decide whether they want to call early legislative elections, which could then be held “at the end of March at the latest”, Olaf Scholz said.
The next general elections in Germany are normally scheduled for September 28, 2025.
