Vera De Ceuster is originally from Balen in Belgium, but has American nationality. This 60-year-old Belgian has lived in Uncle Sam’s country since 1988. A lot of years which are called into question with the resounding announcement of Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential election.
It was through her work that life led her to the United States where she ended up making her life in Georgia, after passing through several states.
If in Belgium, the electoral campaign is focused for example on mobility, pensions, health care… in America, it is above all abortion, immigration and the economy which are at the heart of the debates. “Church is also an important topic, because Americans are very religious,” Vera tells GVA.
Vera had posted a sign supporting Kamala Harris in her backyard, so the news of Trump’s victory unsettled her. “My stomach was really in knots and I couldn’t eat. Changing federal abortion laws is harmful to my daughter’s future. Trump’s desire to reward the rich comes at the expense of the middle class. Immigrants are also often seen as inferior. This really concerns me. »
An important decision
So much so that she has serious questions about her future: “People who vote for him are blind to what’s really going on, but strange things tend to happen in America. Americans’ memories are short. The events of January (the storming of the Capitol in Washington) have long been forgotten or people downplay the facts. It’s truly something typically American.”
“We are particularly concerned about security. The next four years promise to be really intense with lots of conservative legislation. If you don’t do what Trump says, you’re screwed. It remains to be seen what the future holds, but I am considering returning to live in Belgium. Although it’s not a decision I can take lightly. We need to discuss this further within our family. »
