The sixth criminal chamber of the Hainaut court, Mons division, sentenced Said B. on Monday to twelve years in prison for several attempted murders in the city center of Mons.
The French motorist injured seven people during a mad dash in the center of Mons, on the night of June 8 to 9, 2023, between the Grand-Place, rue de Nimy and rue d’Havré. He had just had an argument with some young people he met in a café.
Saïd B. is a repeat offender. He had been convicted in France for similar acts. Placed under arrest warrant following the events, he is still detained.
The court also handed down a three-month prison sentence for carrying a knife, found in his car, and a ten-month prison sentence for possession of drugs.
The court also ordered a permanent disqualification of his driving license.
A sentence commensurate with the seriousness of the facts
“He seemed quite dejected, on the one hand by the qualification, and on the other hand by the rate of the sentence which falls on his head after a year and a half of preventive detention”, indicates Jérémie Berger, his lawyer.
“It is a severe sentence, but one that is commensurate with the seriousness of the acts committed. The images from the urban cameras were broadcast during the public hearing, and it was particularly impressive. (…) We see people get hit, and we wonder ‘how did people not die that day?'”declares Fabrice Guttadauria, lawyer for one of the victims. “One of my clients is still being monitored psychologically. He suffered serious physical after-effects because he was hit head-on. The difficulty for him is to accept that that day, he could have died. In relation to this, he needs help and to be monitored by someone.”
