Surprising news in the world of Quebec theater. The network of Quebec Conservatories announced Friday the appointment of Catherine Richer as director of the Montreal Conservatory of Dramatic (CADM). She will be the very first woman to hold this position in 70 years.

Actress, host and cultural journalist on the show 15-18on Ici Première, Catherine Richer studied theater at Cégep de Saint-Hyacinthe, as well as at CADM, where she obtained a diploma in 2008. From January, she will take over from Suzanne Lantagne, who is part of the faculty . The latter has been acting since the departure of Geoffrey Gaguère, appointed head of the Théâtre du Nouveau Monde (TNM), last August.

Founded by director Jan Doat in 1954, the Montreal Conservatory of Dramatic Art has had several directors throughout its history. The Jean Valcourt, Paul Hébert. Guy Beaulne, Raymond Cloutier, Normand Chouinard, Benoît Dagenais… but never a woman. “Immense honor, incredible privilege, incomparable challenge.
