A major police operation was underway Friday morning in the Montreal-North sector to catch a suspect who allegedly took refuge in an apartment building after stabbing a man.

The attack occurred around 9 a.m., on rue Fleury Est, near the intersection of avenue Vianney, in the borough of Ahuntsic-Cartierville, on the borders of Montréal-.

The victim was allegedly attacked by the suspect with a sharp object, possibly a knife, and suffered a significant stomach injury.

The victim apparently tried to go to the hospital on his own, but collapsed on the sidewalk.

It was a passerby who found the man seriously injured and semi-conscious.

The latter was rushed to hospital, where he was between life and death in the middle of the morning.

After the crime, the attacker fled and likely took refuge in an apartment building in the area.

Several residential buildings were still surrounded by heavily armed police, 90 minutes after the attack, near the intersection of rue Fleury Est and boulevard Saint-Michel.

The motive for the stabbing remains unknown. The exact location where the crime occurred has not yet been established.
