Their names are added to those of dozens of women killed this year by their spouse or ex. Three women died between Saturday and Sunday in France, in Rouen, in Dordogne, and in Reunion, killed by their husband or ex-partner.
On average, a feminicide occurs every three days in France. The Ministry of Justice counted 94 in 2023, compared to 118 in 2022, a count which had been contested by associations, which are demanding more resources to fight against domestic violence. No official data is yet available regarding feminicides committed since the start of 2024.
In Rouen, a 17-year-old girl killed by several stab wounds
The body of a young girl (17 years old) was discovered on Sunday in an apartment in Rouen (Seine-Maritime) and her former companion was arrested at the end of the day, reported the Rouen prosecutor’s office.
The young man, born in 2002, former boyfriend of the victim, was arrested while he was on the run, at the end of the day, at Saint-Lazare station, in Paris, according to the Rouen public prosecutor, Sébastien Gallois, and one of these police sources, confirming information from France 3.
The young girl, whose body was discovered in the afternoon, was killed by several stab wounds, according to the same sources. The Rouen judicial police were seized of the investigation.
In Dordogne, a nonagenarian killed by a gunshot by her husband
A 90-year-old woman was killed by her husband, who then killed himself on Saturday at their home in Trélissac, Dordogne.
«[Samedi] morning, around 6 a.m., police officers from the Périgueux police station were requested following the call […] of a man who reported having killed his wife and warned that he was going to commit suicide”wrote the public prosecutor of Périgueux, Jacques-Edouard Andrault, in a press release, confirming information from France Bleu Périgord. Police officers then went to the home of the couple, whose husband, also aged 90, had previously communicated the address and discovered the lifeless bodies of the two nonagenarians in the bedroom.
“A rifle was next to the husband. Both people had gunshot wounds.added the magistrate, specifying that the husband had not “no criminal record”. The couple had two children. “The favored hypothesis at this stage of the investigations is that of a spousal homicide committed by the husband, followed by the suicide of the latter”he continues. An autopsy will be performed. According to several neighbors cited by France Bleu, the wife had had health problems for several years.
In Reunion, a woman stabbed to death in her car
A 34-year-old woman was found fatally stabbed in her car during the night from Saturday to Sunday in Port, in the west of Reunion Island, AFP reported, citing a police source. Her 32-year-old ex-partner was found seriously injured in the neck in the vehicle, discovered by family members. He was sitting on the driver’s side, with a knife at his feet. The man was known for acts of violence committed against his ex-partner a few days earlier.
Investigators favor the hypothesis of a homicide followed by a suicide attempt. Given his condition, the man could not be heard and was hospitalized. His vital prognosis is in jeopardy, according to the police source.
In 2022, Réunion was the fifth French department with the highest rate of victims of domestic violence recorded after Seine-Saint-Denis, Guyana, Pas-de-Calais and the Nord, according to INSEE.
