Protecting biodiversity: the world is up against the wall

Two years ago, all countries in the world committed to protecting and restoring planetary biodiversity which is in decline. The same people are meeting in Colombia from Monday to take stock of the (meager) progress made since then.

MDespite all the attention it receives, the climate emergency cannot mask another crisis, just as serious: that which hits biodiversity. This will be at the center of concerns during the next summit of the Convention on Biodiversity (CBD), in Cali (Colombia) from October 21 to 1is november. A fully justified concern given the state of ecosystems on a global scale.

As with the climate, the protection of biodiversity was the subject of solemn commitments from the international community, in Montreal, at the end of 2022. At COP15, the 196 signatory states promised to protect 30% of the lands and oceans of by 2030 and to restore at least 30% of degraded terrestrial and marine ecosystems by 2030, each State committing to present a nature restoration and protection plan.
