On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Servion Zoo, visit in the footsteps of a zookeeper

“I know who fixed the fence, so I have confidence.” Pierre Ecoffey is amused by seeing the worried look and the recoil that seizes us at the roar of the beast. On the other side of the lattice, within reach of claws and fangs, Makuti. The almost 200 kg African lion seems to know the reason for our intrusion, celebrating with the head of the keepers and animals staff who has worked for ten years at the Servion Zoo, 20 minutes by car from Lausanne. Fortunately, we are not on the menu, but meal time has come: behind a large bay window located next to the padlocked door, around thirty parents and children are waiting to see the “king of the jungle” sustain. The “beaking” of the wild animals, a spectacle shared by many of the 8 million visitors to the park since its creation, exactly 50 years ago.
