DECRYPTION – Despite increasing budgets, its efficiency disappoints in many areas according to the European Commission for the Efficiency of Justice (CEPEJ).

It is a very cold light that comes to us from the “planet Justice” since the data in question dates back to 2022. However, the always eagerly awaited bi-annual report from the European Commission for the Efficiency of Justice (CEPEJ) draws some constants that are hard to escape. But also a few surprises.

Legal aid in the spotlight

The budget of the French judicial system – which for the CEPEJ includes the budgets allocated to the courts, the public prosecutor’s office and legal aid – amounted to 5.2 billion euros in 2022. This is legal aid which experienced the largest increase with a 36% increase in the amounts allocated to it while those of the courts and public prosecutors increased by 4%.

If between 2020 and 2022, its entire judicial system – which also includes the prison administration – saw its resources increase by 12%, continues to be in the low range of European funding with 77.2 euros per inhabitant…
