A young wolf weighing 17 kg was “taken” during the night of October 14 to 15 “in the perimeter of the Mont-Tendre pack”, we read since this Tuesday morning on the website of the State of Vaud. He further underlines that he intends to continue proactive regulation of the pack until January 31, 2025.

This is the first time that the Department of Youth, Environment and Safety (DJES) has actually pulled the trigger on the controversial entire pack regulations, made possible since last winter by the FOEN and the policy of anticipation of Albert Rösti. As a reminder, the cantons of Valais and Graubünden had then increased their requests, with State Councilor Vassilis Venizelos refusing to follow, citing the risks of falling below the minimum pack quota allocated to the Swiss Jura arc.

A period that has clearly passed. Despite the shooting of a young wolf from the pack last January and after a series of attacks this summer, the Canton finally requested authorization for the “complete elimination” of the pack, authorization granted by the OFEV at the beginning of September.

On the side of the defenders of the summer pasture, the application of fire was long overdue. Last Friday, Prometterre published a post “deploring” the lack of effects on the ground and worrying “about the real desire of the cantonal authorities to resolve the problem”, half-heartedly accusing Vassilis Venizelos of limiting himself to communication .

On the side of those opposed to the shooting, the request was on the contrary considered as “a betrayal” on the part of the environmentalist councilor.

This first shot comes in a once again tense and very uncertain context on the mountain pastures, at the end of a season marked by numerous predations and while the federal regulatory policy has just been considered as a “potential case” of violation of the Berne Convention by the office of the wildlife protection treaty, a treaty dependent on the Council of Europe. The NGOs and the FOEN have now been summoned by for the continuation of the procedure.
