The worst is over in Florida. The hurricane Milton quickly crossed the peninsula from the Gulf of Mexico before reaching the Atlantic on Thursday morning. Suspended overnight because of winds which reached 160 kilometers per hour, rescue operations were able to resume on Thursday. The provisional toll stood at eleven dead at midday on Thursday. Most of these victims were recorded during tornadoes, which preceded the arrival of Miltonparticularly on the Atlantic coast. Meteorological services issued more than 130 alerts on Wednesday alone, a record.

But the disaster scenario of a hurricane predicted to be the most devastating in a century did not occur. Milton finally made landfall, further south than the partly evacuated metropolis of Tampa. The city did not experience as much ocean rise as expected. Milton should be less deadly thanHelenewhich hit Florida two weeks ago before continuing its course in Georgia, the Carolinas and then to Tennessee, states taken by surprise by the torrential rains.
