Greta Thunberg was arrested in Brussels during a protest against fossil fuels

Activist Greta Thunberg was arrested this Saturday in Brussels during a demonstration against government support for the fossil fuel economy in the European Union.

Environmental activist Greta Thunberg was arrested for civil disobedience, among 150 activists present, on Saturday in Belgium following her sit-in to end fossil fuel subsidies to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.

Environmental activists blocked the boulevard du Jardin Botanique in downtown Brussels. They sat down carrying a “Zero-emissions now!” sign. The police intervened by surrounding them.

The origin of this demonstration comes from an open letter from the United for Climate Justice (UCJ) platform. Signed by several organizations, including Greenpeace, it was sent to the institutions of the European Union.

An open letter

The letter highlights that fossil fuel subsidies that “fuel the global climate crisis (…) distort energy demand, perpetuate dependence on polluting energy sources and undermine European energy security, while supporting industries that contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions.”

Greta Thunberg, known for her multiple arrests and speeches for ecology, argued: “This climate crisis, which is only escalating, is existential. Every second our leaders continue to finance fossil fuels, they impact all generations to come.”

At the same time, a climate march was held this afternoon at Place du Luxembourg in Brussels.
