As conflict in the Middle East continues to intensify, Greece is preparing to strengthen its security measures to deal with a potential wave of migrants. This decision was confirmed by a local source this Thursday.

According to the Kathimerini daily, the Greek National Security Council discussed this issue at a recent meeting. The authorities plan to expand the existing reception infrastructure, which can currently accommodate around 3,000 people.

Additionally, Greece’s law enforcement and intelligence services are on heightened alert following recent violence linked to tensions in the Middle East. Security measures have been increased, particularly for potential targets during pro-Palestinian protests.

The Greek government has also put plans in place for the evacuation of nearly 3,500 Greek citizens from Lebanon. Two C-130 military aircraft are on alert to be mobilized if necessary.

The escalation of tensions in the region is attributed to Israel’s prolonged offensive against the Gaza Strip, which has caused around 41,600 casualties, mainly women and children. The conflict has also spread to Lebanon, where Israeli strikes have targeted Hezbollah, causing 1,928 deaths and nearly 9,300 injuries since September 23.
