The United States is toughening its tone towards Tehran, the day after the hundred missiles fired against Israel. “Iran will be held responsible for its actions,” US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield warned Wednesday during an emergency meeting of the Security Council on the situation in the Middle East. During the month of October, the body was chaired by Switzerland, which called for a resumption of “dialogue, the only way to avoid a regional war”.
The American diplomat, although considered a dove within the Biden administration, estimated that the Iranian attack “was not defensive”. “Iranian territory was not threatened.” “The Islamic Revolutionary Guards [la force d’élite iranienne, ndlr] acted in response to the death of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, a terrorist movement responsible for the deaths of thousands of Lebanese, Americans and Israelis,” she denounced. Iranian Ambassador Saeid Iravani invoked “self-defense” after several Iranian military officials were killed by Israel in Lebanon and Syria in recent months. He assured that his country had targeted “military installations” in Israel on Tuesday.
