The Security Council on Saturday expressed concern over growing tensions and military operations around el-Fasher, the capital of Sudan’s North Darfur state.

NATIONS, April 27 (Xinhua) — The Security Council on Saturday expressed concern over growing tensions and military operations around el-Fasher, the capital of Sudan’s North Darfur state.

In a press release, Security Council members expressed deep concern over an imminent offensive by the paramilitary Support Forces (RSF) and their allied militias against el-Fasher, home to hundreds of thousands of people having fled the violence raging elsewhere.

They called on the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF, who have been clashing since April 15, 2023, to stop the buildup of military forces around el-Fasher and take measures to de-escalate the situation while respecting their obligations to under international humanitarian law.

Council members reiterated their call for an immediate cessation of hostilities. They urged all United Nations member states to refrain from external interference and support efforts to achieve lasting peace. They reminded all parties to the conflict and UN member states that they must respect their obligations regarding the arms embargo.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has repeatedly warned of an attack on el-Fasher, a major UN humanitarian hub.
