Blockage in the Brussels Region: should the weight of the Flemish in the formation of the government be reduced?

Blockage in the Brussels Region: should the weight of the Flemish in the formation of the government be reduced?

There is still no government in the Brussels Region, so this question from the Grand Baromètre RTL Info/Ipsos/Le Soir is particularly relevant: should the weight of the Flemish in the formation of the Brussels government be reduced?

The Flemish currently make up half of the Brussels government, while on the demographic map of the Region, they represent much less.

53% of Brussels residents and 51% of Walloons are asking for the weight of the Flemish to be corrected in the formation of a government, while 66% of Flemish people are opposed to it. We are therefore in a potential new community war. It is explosive, because, look at the current blockage: 3 French-speaking parties (MR, PS and Engagés) have been circling around the small Flemish ecologist party Groen for three months and everything, everything, everything is blocked.

The system is locked and there is a majority of French speakers who are asking to change it. But if we change things in the Brussels Region, why not change them at the federal level as well? There is even a certain logic given that the Flemish weigh more demographically than the French speakers in Belgium.

The question was therefore asked in our Grand Baromètre RTL info/Ispos/Le Soir: should the weight of French speakers be reduced in the formation of the federal government? And the answer is clear: 70% of Walloons, 71% of Brussels residents think no, while 45% of Flemish people are in favour, compared to 34% who are opposed. It is the NVA and the Vlaams Belang who are most keen to reduce the weight of French speakers in the Belgian government.

In short, if we touch the Brussels balance, the Flemish will demand a review of the federal balance. So, as is often the case in Belgium, we will not touch anything.
