Is school insurance mandatory (and are you covered by home insurance)?

Ask an expert

The school asked us for a school insurance certificate at the start of the school year. Do we need to take out a new contract?

Compulsory activities listed in the student’s schedule (classes, physical education and sports, etc.) do not require specific insurance to attend. However, all optional activities offered by the establishment (canteen, morning or evening reception, cultural outings, green class, etc.) require providing a school insurance certificate.

This is therefore essential for the child to participate in all the activities of their school, college or high school.

Two certificates

School insurance includes two main guarantees: the child’s civil liability, for material or bodily damage caused to others, and injuries suffered by the child himself or without an identified perpetrator. Some insurers include extensions – extracurricular activities, holidays, theft or breakage of equipment, cyberbullying.

It is not necessary to take out one if you are covered elsewhere. The parents’ home insurance, which generally includes civil liability extended to family members living under the same roof, provides the first level of coverage.

Combined with a life accident guarantee or an individual accident guarantee covering the child, it acts as school insurance. Both certificates must be presented to the establishment to prove that the child is insured.
