“We are delighted that he has a place here forever.” This is how Motörhead manager Todd Singerman comments on the news. This Tuesday, August 2, the ashes of Lemmy Kilmister, legendary bassist and singer of the ace of spades band, will be scattered at Wacken Open Air, a metal festival in Germany. The event will take place during a “celebration of the life of this rock and roll icon and his legacy”, entitled “Lemmy Forever”.

For festival organizer Thomas Jensen, “Lemmy’s return to Wacken is a huge honour.” “We are going to create a place of memory for him that will do justice to the importance he had for an entire genre and beyond,” he declared. “There has always been a special bond between Motörhead and Wacken Open Air; no band has played here so often”, adds Holger Hübner, co-organizer, before adding: “The fact that its journey ends here will always have a special meaning”.

Tributes, do you want some here

This is not the first time this type of event has occurred. Since the death of Lemmy, in 2015, following a cancer that had just been diagnosed to him, many tributes, sometimes original, have taken shape. This was particularly the case with this ammunition, containing Lemmy’s ashes (he had requested it before his death) and sent to his close friends.

Later, in 2022, the Hellfest unveils on the occasion of its fifteenth anniversary a brand new statue of Lemmy… also, partly built with the ashes of the bassist and singer. Enough to perpetuate the legend around the British group, which also unveiled, on June 16, a new album recorded during the Montreux Jazz Festival 2007. Motörhead notably included Rosalie, from Thin Lizzy.
