The weekend of January 18 and 19, the 27-year-old singer was one of the headliners at a festival in Atlanta which brought together, among others, Lil Wayne and Gucci Mane. In the photo that made the rounds on Twitter, we see her kneeling on the stage of the State Farm Arena in front of an almost non-existent audience. “This thing was EMPTY,” one person wrote on X.
Camila Cabello first started with the group Fifth Harmony and then exploded into a solo career in 2018 with Havanaa hit which allowed her to steal first place from Selena Gomez by becoming the most listened to singer in streaming. But that was 7 years ago. His fourth and final album, C, XOXOreleased in June 2024, did not have the expected success. This is the first time that Camila Cabello has not reached the top 10 of the Billboard 200 in the United States. His single I Luv It reached number 81 on the Billboard Hot 100. Perhaps the singer is in a “flop era” as one user on X suggests when another bluntly says it’s “embarrassing.”
But some are coming to the pop star’s aid, like American singer Mod Sun who tweeted this:
“99% of the artists would have canceled the show and issued a statement about mental health. She just earned my respect by continuing to perform.”
Possible reasons for this flop
It is possible that some of his early fans turned their backs on him after discovering his racist comments. Indeed, in 2019, old embarrassing publications from the young woman resurfaced. Camila Cabello maintained a blog on Tumblr between 2012 and 2013 in which she repeatedly used the word “nigger.” She has also shared numerous memes and GIFs that are insulting and feature racial stereotypes. She apologized flatly afterwards. Atlanta being a predominantly black city, that would explain why no one came to his concert.
Another reason given: time. Atlanta and the southern United States are currently facing a cold snap and snowstorms. The weather conditions were not on the singer’s side.
