Dear friends,

I was very saddened last night when I heard the news of the passing of my dear George. He was one of my first photographers when I started almost 40 years ago. He was my photographic hero. Modest and so humble despite his fierce talent, the memories come back to me in droves now.

I always enjoyed visiting him in his home state of New Jersey. We shared stories about what it took to survive in this profession. I remember him telling me how he used to go door to door asking to take baby pictures to feed his family. Her story matched mine, which also went door to door as the ladies of Avon showed pictures in a box to keep the gallery and my family afloat with the hope that someone would buy one.

George seems to me to belong to a generation of precision artisans who are today an endangered species. He was a source of joy and inspiration. As I say in the documentary below, he taught me about America and helped me understand my adopted country through his images.

I was so happy to introduce him to the producer of the musical “Jersey Boys” who wanted to use one of his stunning images as the main backdrop for the set. It turned out to be one of the biggest surprise theater hits of the 20th century and the licensing rights George received helped him continue plying his trade. Sitting down together to watch the show on Broadway was one of the great joys of my life.

George was able to do what he loved to do, which is the greatest form of success an artist could wish for. He is in the pantheon of greats, whether it is Edward Hopper or Edward Weston. I am sad but I feel honored and blessed to have known him because I know many others in our community feel the same way. Rest in peace my friend.

Peace and love,

-

“I don’t talk about my photos with emotion. It’s up to others to do it. I will say that I love my photos. This is what keeps me going. Photography teaches us to see and we can see whatever we want. When I take a photo, I make a wish, I have always sought beauty” – George Tice
